y event in Brussels on the 13th of January in order to support applicants
wishing to apply to its 1st Call for Proposals.
\nThe European
Commission initiative will provides urban areas throughout Europe with re
sources to test new and unproven solutions to address urban challenges. Ba
sed on article 8 of ERDF\, the Initiative has a total ERDF budget of EUR 3
72 million for 2014-2020.
\nThis programme suports (80% cofinancing)
innovative actions in “Energy transition” as:
\n– Increasing the pro
duction of renewable energy at local level and improving its distribution<
/p>\n
– Energy efficient retrofitting of buildings – buildings consume s
ome 40% of final energy in the EU and this is the largest and most cost-ef
fective area for improvement.
\n– Energy efficiency measures with th
e aim of minimising the risk of fuel poverty and its consequences (e.g. po
or health\, child poverty\, educational under-achievement etc.)
\nInc
reasing the adoption of low carbon technologies.
\n– Supporting ener
gy efficiency and smart energy management in public infrastructure and the
housing sector.
\n– Moderating the demand for heating and cooling a
nd deploying innovative\, nature-based solutions to heat/cool buildings an
d neighbourhoods.

DESCRIPTION:The Customer Domain is one of the smart grid domains which d
eals with end-users and interacts with other domains such as distribution\
, markets\, operations\, and service provider domains. The Customer Domain
is mainly divided into residential\, commercial and industrial customers
which support automation functions such as remote reading of meters and co
ntrolling of load obtained by communication between smart devices.
\nDemand Response (DR) is one of the typical methods for optimizing load ch
aracteristics in power systems. Utilities offer DR schemes to generate inc
entives toward consumers’ power consumption behavior for load optimization
. In tariff planning\, power consumption variation is an important issue w
hich is difficult to be analyzed quantifiably.
\nThis webinar presen
ts a boundary model for analysing consumers’ power consumption behaviors\,
with a particular focus on residential home appliances. Candidate tariffs
are analyzed in this model for their load variation potentials. Practical
applications of the model on pricing and smart meter deployment will be c
onsidered. Future direction for the Customer Domain will be discussed\, an
d case studies based on industrial consumer\, and a numerical case study o
n practical cement industry will be shared.

DESCRIPTION:Due to unstable generation creating problems within energy t
ransmission\, RES penetration forces power utilities to change. In order t
o survive\, they are expected to change their business models and collabor
ate with each other. Joint TSOs\, DSOs activities play a key role here and
we are always looking to develop new techniques and strategies to ensure
a smooth co-operation.
\nDecentralization of the electricity sector\
, with production sources closer to the consumption place and digitalizati
on of energy creates challenges for DSOs in managing new generation. The i
deal way to accommodate these uncertainties within transmission network op
eration are met with the need for Control Systems\, consisting of HVDC cor
ridors\, and the use of sophisticated software.
\nSmart techniques a
nd strategies would limit flaws and risks within the transmission network\
, smart methods to ensure stability of the system and strengthened coordin
ation between power utilities may help to conquer future challenges and ob
stacles within Operation.

\n- Deciding the best solutions to manage cost pressure
\n- Co-ordinating interconnections between power utilities
\n- Ove

DESCRIPTION:Decarbonisation and digitalisation: two mega trends that wi
ll change the European energy system.
\n
Two mega-trends are rapidly converging to reshape the European energy syst
em: decarbonisation and digitalisation. Based on strong public policies\,
decarbonisation is already reshuffling the European energy mix\, while ind
ustry-driven technological innovation is progressively opening-up new and
potentially disruptive opportunities for evolving energy systems. These tr
ends will transform the European energy system from a static and centralis
ed model into a dynamic and decentralised one. In this framework\, the gov
ernance of the European energy system will also need to change. With this
event\, Bruegel will launch a new paper-authored by Simone Tagliapietra an
d Georg Zachmann- on the issue.
